The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Internship Programme offers a valuable opportunity to develop your career while contributing to intra- and extra-African trade.
Join one of Africa’s leading multilateral financial institutions and gain practical insight into trade finance, structured trade, and the Bank’s mission to promote economic development across the continent.
About the Afreximbank Internship Programme
The Afreximbank Internship Programme provides students with a deeper understanding of African trade challenges and the principles of trade finance. Interns learn about the Bank’s mandate and operations while bringing fresh ideas to the organisation.
The programme is not virtual — successful candidates must relocate to the assigned location, with most placements at the Bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. Interns receive induction training, a dedicated mentor, and attachment to a primary department (with possible rotations across departments).
At the end of the internship, participants submit a report detailing their key learnings and how they plan to apply them towards Africa’s development.
Duration: 3 to 6 months (maximum). Internships are offered twice a year, typically with intakes in January and June. You can participate only once.
Note: This is a full-time, on-site programme. Interns are not entitled to full staff benefits and are not considered contract or permanent employees. The internship does not guarantee future employment.
Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)
The programme is open to:
- Students currently enrolled in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at a recognised institution (preferred).
- Candidates studying economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering, or related fields.
- Nationals of Afreximbank member countries, students of African descent in the diaspora, and non-African students whose vision for Africa’s transformation aligns with the Bank’s mission.
- Applicants aged 20 to 32 in the year of application.
- Candidates fluent in English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is an advantage.
Important: Children of Afreximbank staff are not eligible. Selection is strictly merit-based, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
Benefits of the Afreximbank Internship
Interns are responsible for their own day-to-day living expenses (accommodation after induction, meals, local transport, clothing, medical insurance, and group personal accident insurance).
However, the Bank provides the following support on a gratis basis:
- Monthly tax-free stipend: USD 1,000
- Housing allowance: USD 500 per month (for interns relocating from their home countries), paid at the end of each month
- Coverage of reasonable return travel costs (most economical and direct route from your institution, in line with Bank policy)
- Hotel accommodation (bed and breakfast only) for the first week of induction upon arrival
- Airport/hotel transfers on arrival and departure
- Relevant residence visa for the duration of the internship (if required)
Note: You must provide proof of valid medical and group personal accident insurance (covering Egypt or the internship location) before starting. Failure to do so will result in withdrawal of the offer.
