Int Scholarships Program
Int Scholarships Program

The ICTP Postgraduate Diploma Programme 2026-2027 offers an excellent opportunity for talented young scientists from developing countries to prepare for PhD studies in physics, mathematics, or related fields. Organised by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, this tuition-free, one-year pre-PhD programme has been running since 1991.

Many graduates have successfully pursued PhDs at prestigious universities in Europe and North America. After postdoctoral positions abroad, numerous alumni return to their home countries to teach and build advanced research groups. Others build careers at leading scientific institutions worldwide, and many maintain long-term collaborations with ICTP.

Key Programme Details

  • Duration: 1 year (typically from 1 September to 31 August).
  • Location: Trieste, Italy.
  • Fields of Study:
    • High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics
    • Condensed Matter Physics
    • Mathematics
    • Earth System Physics
    • Quantitative Life Sciences
  • Programme Structure: Intensive courses followed by examinations, then a dissertation to be submitted and defended.

Eligibility Criteria

The programme is open to young, qualified graduates (generally under 28 years of age) from countries that are members of the United Nations, UNESCO, or IAEA.

Minimum qualification: A degree equivalent to an MSc (or an exceptionally good BSc) in physics, mathematics, or a related field.

Fluency in spoken and written English is essential, as all instruction is in English.

Applicants must demonstrate adequate knowledge in core topics relevant to their chosen field:

  • Condensed Matter Physics: Solid state physics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, classical mechanics, electrodynamics, mathematical physics.
  • High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics: Classical mechanics, electrodynamics, special theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics.
  • Earth System Physics: Theoretical background in physics, mathematics or engineering; mathematical methods applied in geophysics and geosciences.
  • Mathematics: Basic abstract algebra, elements of real and complex analysis, topology.
  • Quantitative Life Sciences: Classical mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, mathematical methods for physics, basic programming skills.

Selection is based on academic performance (university records) and recommendations from senior scientists. The committee prioritises the best-qualified candidates while aiming for gender balance and diverse geographical representation.

Benefits

  • Tuition-free education.
  • A limited number of scholarships (approximately 10 per field) for successful candidates from developing countries (with emphasis on least developed regions) to cover living expenses and travel.
  • Travel grants for applicants from developing countries.
  • Scholarship recipients receive a grant for the full year of study.
  • Self-funded candidates from developing countries may attend if they provide proof of sufficient funding for the entire year.
